No pairing of devices required. This is a standalone holder that has a built-in image detection. It tracks quite well as long as you doon't move too fast and are not too close. It can be faked out by close movement of hands and can lose the use. Overall, it works well. The holder is a little finnicky to adjust when placing your phone but once set, it seems to hold the phone well. IF you need to adjust height angle, get the model with adjustable arm. This is probably best used at a distance of about 3-6 feet from the user.
